Laptop

The new laptop is working well--the migration tool seems to have successfully moved almost everything, though I'm still figuring out a few places where I have to say "it's OK to use those old keychain items" so that the stored passwords and such get used.

It looks very little different from my old one--metallic-look keys instead of black, case is a little more rounded, and all the ports moved from the back under a little flip-down cover to the two sides with no covers. It does look a little messier to have the USB, Ethernet, and power cables sticking out the sides, but so far it's not a problem.

Anyway, I was really impressed with the migration tool. It moved user accounts, files, software, and all and with very few glitches (at least, very few that have shown up as yet). Even moved the "government warning" message on the login screen. Now if OpenAFS will just come out with a version for Tiger, the old laptop can be honorably decommissioned.

I managed to misread that at first as "migraine tool", and had a very surreal moment.

It's rather the opposite: an anti-migraine tool, given the way it helped with the file transfer!

The backlit keyboard ought to be nice. ;)

Also, I think you'll find side mounted cables convenient, when it comes time to unplug them, rather than having to reach around the LCD. Wish I was getting a new Powerbook...

I not missing the little "flips itself back up before you can get the cable plugged in" cover, that's for sure!

Haven't tried out the backlit keyboard yet, as I've been working in full light. Since I've found that my old laptop was really too big to use on an airplane (at least on Delta, with planes that have less room between you and the seat in front of you than most), I guess it will mostly be useful in darkened meeting rooms and for the occasional "reading/responding to email while watching TV" session.

Now for the important questions: did all the Bujold filk get moved? and, is the monitor on the new computer large enough for lots of listies to gather behind for some sweet synchronized singing? :)

Good luck with the new machine!
