Database testing

It took us until Thursday at the end of the day, but the water-use test team managed to crash Ingres and bring the entire testing to a halt. Yes! 'Twasn't me personally, though. Someone tried a retrieval by picking all the counties in Virginia (of which there are many, though other states have even more) instead of just choosing to select on the state code. The query was longer than Ingres could handle, and it did not fail gracefully. <g>

The water-use group is always somewhat separate--it's the newest of the databases, water use is not a big project in most states, and the rest of USGS often doesn't know much about what we do. Being at these tests is actually a good way to mingle with the other areas (ground water, surface water, and water quality), though crashing Ingres is perhaps not the best way to have people become aware of you...

Are you still stuck in the wilds of Denver? [sounds like a line from Sayers, doesn't it? ;)]

It's good to see you posting again. How was the ball game?

The ball game was great--lovely sunny day in Denver, great seats near third base 22 rows back, just pleasant all 'round.

I leave for the airport shortly. It's raining in Denver today, and we'll fly back east where the early effects of Arlene are giving more rain. Probably a good chance that there will be flight delays in Atlanta, so my flight that's due at 8:30 or so this evening will be later. Oh, well, got the iPod, and HH, and a backup paperback book for when all electronic devices must be in the off position.

Yeah, Cute When Paranoid [& seemingly over-prepared] is the way to go when traveling by air. Don't forget the stashes of food in the luggage.

If you need to be picked up at the airport, just give us a call.
