Redistricting

The good news is that I've been redistricted out of the 4th Congressional District, represented by the lovely (cough, cough) Cynthia McKinney, last seen making a splash by hitting a Capitol police officer with her cell phone when he, not recognizing her, tried to stop her from walking around the metal detectors.

The bad news is that I'm now in the 5th District, which is predominately the City of Atlanta proper. The incumbent is John Lewis. Not being very politically minded, I don't have much of an impression of John Lewis, though he has to be better than McKinney. I do feel that my suburban, unincorporated area doesn't fit that well with true urban Atlanta, but...at least I'm away from McKinney.

From the Almanac of American Politics: "... John Lewis, who made history a generation ago as a hero of the civil rights movement... In 1959, at age 19, he helped organize the first lunch-counter sit-in... In May 1961, he was on the first of the Freedom Rides... In 1965, he led to Selma-to-Montgomery march to petition for voting rights..." and more in the same vein. He sounds like a keeper to me; he put his life and limbs on the line when it counted (and was beaten repeatedly, including a skull fracture), and has been a hard worker for civil rights ever since. Not flashy - a tugboat, not a showboat, as one of his old campaign ads said - but he gets things done.

He's not godawful; he's not great.

All things considered, we could do worse.

My neighborhood is much like yours -- and he's done okay.

That's good to hear. Low profile and not godawful will be a nice change.
